Why monitor Raptors? Raptors, as top avian predators, are environmental indicators and the first to be affected by environmental pressures. They are barometers of ecosystem health.
There are a variety of ways that you can help IRSG, depending on your skills and interests.Taking part in IRSG surveys is both enjoyable and rewarding.

Become a Member
Annual Membership is €15. The financial contributions made by our Members enable us to deliver the most pressing ‘self-directed’ work through surveys, monitoring, conferences and training workshops.
There are two main Membership categories, namely Full Membership and Supporting Membership. Full Members are those that are engaged in Raptor fieldwork and submit data annually.

Annual Conference
The IRSG Annual Conference is on Sat 26th January 2019. Entry fee for the Conference is around €25 and is pay on the day. Please register in advance via our Contacts page to help give us an idea of numbers attending.

Stay Tuned!There are 14 species of diurnal Raptor and 3 Owl species that are known to occur in the Republic of Ireland, either as residents, migrants or rare vagrants.
IRSG are currently developing a free identification guide that we will make available through the website.
I.D Tips!
Raptor identification can be challenging, however most species have diagnostic features that tell them apart. There are some simple rules to follow that can help:
If you see a Raptor, think about Size; Shape; Colour Pattern; Markings; Behaviour; Habitat; and Calls. With a bit of practice you will quickly gain confidence.

Merlin Survey 2018
More Info (Coming Soon)On the back of a successful national Peregrine Survey in 2017, the IRSG and BirdWatch Ireland co-ordinated a pilot survey for Merlin [Meirliún] in 2018.
Merlin are notoriously difficult to survey, and so work in 2018 was to devise a proper survey methodology for this species.

The IRSG are recruiting a part-time Monitoring Officer who will be responsible for collating all data submitted to us.

Grant GuidelinesThe IRSG Student Research Grant supports scientific ecological Raptor related research in Ireland with project funding up to €1,000.

IRSG Distribution Maps

COMING SOON!
The IRSG Raptor Distribution Maps Scheme will hopefully be launched in 2018 and be a fully interactive map viewer allowing users to view up-to-date Distribution Maps for all our Raptor species. We are in the process of digitising our historical records into a geospatial database and expect these historical datasets to be available to view also.

How it will work
Distribution Maps will be based on a grid system projected to Irish Transverse Mercator (ITM), the geographic coordinate system for Ireland. Licensing confidentiality and the need to protect sensitive records in compliance with our Data Policy mean that public viewing of the database will be limited to low resolutions to avoid the disclosure of sensitive sites.

Mission Statement
The Irish Raptor Study Group (IRSG) is a voluntary organisation, formed in 1994, that specialises in the deployment of volunteer fieldworkers with highly specialised skills in the identification and survey of raptors and owls (birds of prey) in the Republic of Ireland. The IRSG main aims are to:
1. promote the conservation and protection of all wild breeding and migratory raptor species and their habitats in Ireland;
2. encourage research and monitoring of all raptor species; and, co-ordinate and assist members with species monitoring and the publication of such work where appropriate;
3. set up and maintain a confidential geodatabase and nest recording scheme; and, with appropriate data sharing protocols in place, circulate the results as appropriate to other groups, bodies and stakeholders, to enhance the conservation of raptors.
4. co-operate as necessary with 3rd parties, other Non-government organisations, regulatory and statutory bodies in the Republic of Ireland, to further the monitoring, conservation and study of raptors.

The Irish Raptor Study Group (IRSG) is a voluntary organisation, formed in 1994, that specialises in the deployment of volunteer fieldworkers with highly specialised skills in the identification and survey of Raptors (Birds of Prey).
The IRSG has two primary aims, as stated in our group constitution, namely to (a) promote the conservation and protection of all wild breeding and migratory Raptor species and their habitats in Ireland and (b) encourage research and monitoring of all Raptor species and the publication of such work where appropriate.
A key element of the Groups work is to collect and collate data to determine the adundance, distribution and population trends of Raptors.
The IRSG have been involved in all national surveys of Raptor species to date (including Peregrine and Hen Harrier) and are actively pursuing an All-Ireland Raptor Monitoring Scheme, in collaboration with our partners the Northern Ireland Raptor Study Group (NIRSG), to effectively monitor Raptor meta-populations in Ireland and the United Kingdom.
